Inspiring Portraits

Boy with toy hand grenade. Photo by: Diane Arbus 1962
This is one of those pictures which I can't get tired of looking at. I thinking it captures such a great emotion and sense of frustration and tension. The way that his strap is down his arm, his claw-like hand and his maniac expression make it a fascinating portrait.

I find this set of portraits has a deep sense of emotion that really captures my attention. Her expressions are completely different in each one but at the same time they all give a sense of sadness and entrapment.  The powder on her face gives her a more profound and penetrating look.

City Silhouettes is a series of pictures by photographer Jasper James where he superimposes the portraits with the cityscapes using light and reflected glass. It's a way of illustrating the cityscapes through the person viewing it, creating a familiar silhouette. It leaves us with a certain mystery of the person in the portrait, compensating it with a second subject in the picture which is the city. This makes it very unique and interesting.

Marilyn Monroe Photographed by: Richard Avedon 1957

This photograph makes part of his portrait film portfolio which includes several portraits of different actors and directors from photographer Richard Avedon. I especially like this portrait of Marilyn Monroe, I think her expression feels distant and absent giving the portrait an awkward feeling. She seems to be in a different planet and it makes me wonder on what she must've been thinking at that time.
